About Stratford Upon Avon Markets
Early records tell of a special charter given by King Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) for Stratford upon Avon to hold a weekly market. The Charter was obtained in the year 1196 with the aim to attract merchants from further afield to trade with their goods and produce. A new charter was given to Stratford upon Avon on 28th June 1553 by the ailing young king, Edward VI, the heir of Henry VIII. This Charter allowed the newly formed borough to collect tolls from the weekly Thursday market and 2 annual Fairs. The weekly market remained on a Thursday for nearly 266 years until George III authorised market day to change to a Friday because of the clash with other Warwickshire markets and has remained so upto present day.
The Charter Market is now situated in Rother Street at the top end of Stratford town centre and hosts approx. 40 traders selling a wide range of goods and produce.
Market Traders Committee
The Committee on behalf of all Traders welcome you to Stratford upon Avon Markets.
Most permanent traders on Stratford-upon-Avon markets are members of NMTF.
The National Market Traders Federation was born way back in 1899 when a group of market traders in Sheffield realised the need to form a body to represent the needs of the traders. Over the decades more and more traders nationwide joined this trade association which gave them credibility with customers. Annual membership includes free full cover for Public & Product Liability Insurance as well as Employers Liability Cover for their employees. Today Market Organisers and managers know that any visitors can buy with confidence when making their purchases from a NMTF member.
The NMTF Branch system was created to encourage market traders to represent themselves on their market. By traders forming a committee consisting of elected officers a true representation can be made with the market operators whether on private or council run markets. The Stratford-upon-Avon Branch was formed in 2015 and is recognised by the market operators and both Town and District Councils. An excellent working relationship has been created, all having the common aim for successful markets in Stratford-upon-Avon.
In 2012 Groupe Geraud and LSD Promotions entered a partnership agreement to operate all the markets in Stratford-upon-Avon.
In 2015 this arrangement changed with Groupe Geraud managing the Friday, Saturday and Sunday markets and LSD Promotions managing the Christmas markets.
